Angiocentric glioma-associated seizures: The possible role of EATT2, pyruvate carboxylase and glutamine synthetase

PurposeOur purpose was to better understand the pathogenesis of seizures associated with angiocentric glioma. Angiocentric glioma is an indolent and rare low-grade Its typical clinical presentation epileptic seizures. The tumor-associated poorly understood. Among possible pathomechanisms, increased neurotoxic concentrations glutamate has been proposed. Glutamate transporters, pyruvate carboxylase glutamine synthetase are involved in maintaining physiological concentration inter synaptic spaces.MethodsWe evaluated immunohistochemical expression EAAT2 (the most important transporter), 17 gliomas.ResultsEAAT2 never expressed (0%) neoplastic cells none cases studied. Pyruvate cytoplasm 16/17 (94 %). Glutamine 15/17 (88 %).ConclusionThe net result this enzymatic expression, particular considering loss EAAT2, could be clef, which might increase local network excitability initially involving intratumoral neurons. observation that glioma-associated epilepsy at least part related deficiency opens up interesting therapeutic perspectives.
